The Hype Cycle Playbook

“Technology hype cycles follow predictable patterns. Whether Bitcoin 2013, ICOs 2017, AI 2024, or any of the dozens of tech hypes over the past two decades — the same actors appear: founders, analysts, evangelists, charlatans — people who build, explain, finance, or exploit the ecosystem. The same roles, the same mistakes, the same extraction patterns.”

— The Hype Cycle Playbook, Executive Summary

The playbook identifies 25 recurring roles across 6 categories and analyzes each: how it monetizes, what skills it requires, when the optimal entry point is, what the first 30 days look like, and how it typically fails. The framework is technology-agnostic — the 25 roles were derived from comparing crypto and AI cycles, but they appear in every speculative technology wave.

The assessment adds the Ikigai meta-lens: five dimensions of role fit — monetization, skills, inclination, ecosystem need, and timing. Timing is the dimension Ikigai doesn't have but hype cycles demand. A role that fits on four dimensions but fails on the fifth is a trap.

The Hype Cycle Playbook emerged from observing the same patterns repeat across every technology wave he worked in or around — the same roles appearing, the same mistakes recurring, the same extraction mechanisms activating. The framework is the result of mapping those patterns systematically.
